Background of the Study
Mobile communication has revolutionized language use, and in Nigeria, SMS language represents a unique evolution of morphosyntax influenced by digital interaction. This study explores how mobile texting practices affect the structural aspects of Nigerian language, focusing on alterations in morphology and syntax. The abbreviated forms, creative spellings, and innovative syntactic constructions prevalent in SMS language illustrate how technology reshapes traditional language conventions (Chukwu, 2023). The evolution of these linguistic forms reflects broader socio-cultural trends, including increased informality, rapid communication, and the need for brevity in digital interactions (Uzo, 2024). By analyzing text message corpora and surveying users, this research investigates the extent to which mobile communication drives morphosyntactic changes and how these changes are negotiated in everyday language. The study highlights that while some changes may simplify language use, others contribute to the development of new linguistic norms. Ultimately, this investigation aims to document the dynamic interplay between mobile communication and language structure, offering insights into the future trajectory of Nigerian language evolution (Ikechukwu, 2025).

Statement of the Problem
There is a significant gap in understanding how mobile communication, particularly SMS language, influences the morphosyntax of Nigerian languages. Traditional morphosyntactic frameworks do not fully account for the innovative structures emerging in digital text messages (Okechukwu, 2023). This oversight restricts a comprehensive analysis of language evolution driven by technology, potentially leading to misinterpretation of linguistic data in digital contexts. The informal and rapidly changing nature of SMS language challenges existing theories of morphology and syntax, making it difficult to establish standardized norms. Without addressing these emerging patterns, educational and linguistic policies may fail to accommodate new language practices, thereby marginalizing a significant aspect of modern communication (Ngozi, 2024). This study seeks to fill this gap by systematically investigating the morphosyntactic features of SMS language and their implications for broader language use (Chinwe, 2025).

Objectives of the Study

  1. To document the morphosyntactic changes in Nigerian SMS language.
  2. To analyze the influence of mobile communication on language structure.
  3. To evaluate the implications of these changes for traditional morphosyntactic models.

Research Questions

  1. What morphosyntactic features characterize Nigerian SMS language?
  2. How does mobile communication influence the evolution of these features?
  3. What are the implications of these changes for traditional linguistic frameworks?

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it provides critical insights into how mobile communication transforms Nigerian morphosyntax. The findings will inform linguistic theory, language teaching, and digital communication practices, bridging the gap between traditional language structures and emerging digital forms. By analyzing SMS language evolution, the research contributes to a deeper understanding of the impact of technology on language change (Chukwu, 2023; Ngozi, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study is limited to the topic only, focusing solely on the effect of mobile communication on Nigerian morphosyntax through SMS language.

Definitions of Terms

  • Morphosyntax: The branch of linguistics that studies the interaction between morphological and syntactic structures.
  • SMS Language: A form of abbreviated and informal language used in text messaging.
  • Mobile Communication: The use of mobile devices to exchange information through digital text and voice messages.
